Key Stage 3
KS3 Computing is split into 3 main sections where students will cover a range of skills. A variety of units will be completed covering core ICT skills, creative computing skills, and computer science. Computer Science will provide students with the opportunity to learn to program as well as understand how computers work.
Students will develop various skills in digital literacy, the creative use of ICT and computer science. At the end of Key Stage 3 all students should have developed a range of practical skills using popular office software, image and video editing tools, web development software and have used graphical and scripting programming languages. Students will also develop an understanding of computer science theory looking at areas such as networking, encryption and computer security in preparation for KS4.
We are constantly adapting our curriculum in order to make use of new and emerging technologies and the scheme of work will change accordingly.
Students begin by exploring the Academy network, they will have the opportunity to use email, develop their knowledge of Internet safety, using a spreadsheet to model a business scenario as well as creating and editing a video. Students will then move on to examine methods of presenting information, with particular focus on audience, purpose, consistency and professionalism by developing a number of promotional business documents.
Students will learn how to use professional image editing software to accomplish a range of tasks. More complex issues such as bias, validity and the reliability of information on the Internet are also addressed. Students will have the opportunity to develop their creative skills in units of work that cover web authoring and animation. They will also be given the opportunity to develop their database and data handling skills and will be expected to develop an ability to work independently solving problems using an ICT solution.
Students will be introduced to programming languages. Initially a graphical language will be used as an introduction to programming and later in KS3 students will experience using a scripting language to solve a range of problems.
Students are assessed six times each year using a combination of project work, self-evaluation and teacher assessment. This enables students to see their own progression as well as highlighting specific areas for improvement.

Key Stage 4
OCR 9-1 GCSE Computer Science
The course gives students a real, in-depth understanding of how computer technology works. Students will no doubt be familiar with the use of computers and other related technology from their other subjects and elsewhere. However, this course will give them an insight into what goes on ‘behind the scenes’, including computer programming, which many students find absorbing.
The course provides excellent preparation for higher study and employment in the field of computer science. The increasing importance of information technologies means there will be a growing demand for professionals who are qualified in this area.
The course will develop critical thinking, analysis and problem-solving skills through the study of computer programming, giving students a fun and interesting way to develop these skills, which can be transferred to other subjects.
OCR GCSE Computer Science is taught over 120 guided learning hours and comprises of three units: Two externally assessed theory examinations and one programming related assessment.

Certificate in Digital Applications (CiDA) Level 2
The Certificate in Digital Applications (CiDA) is a level 2 vocational qualification for creative learners with a passion for digital applications.
CiDA has been developed from the popular DiDA qualification and focuses on developing a range of skills in creative computing. It aims to empower learners to play an active role in the digital sector rather than being simply consumers of digital content. The course is tailor made to meet the needs of today’s creative industries, the qualification covers imaging, creative multimedia, website development and computer game production.
Students will have the opportunity to develop a range of skills by practically using multiple software applications to develop digital solutions to specific ICT tasks.
The Edexcel Level 2 Certificate in Digital Applications (CiDA) is taught over 120 guided learning hours (GLH) and comprises two units: one externally assessed unit with a practical exam (25%), and a choice of one internally assessed optional unit (75%).

NCFE Level 2 Technical Award in Interactive Media
Interactive media is the integration of digital media including combinations of electronic text, graphics, moving images and sound into a structured digital computerised environment that allows people to interact with the data for appropriate purposes.
The NCFE Level 2 Technical Award in Interactive Media complements GCSE qualifications. It is aimed at 14-16 year olds studying the Key Stage 4 curriculum who are interested in any aspect of interactive media, including sourcing ideas and design. It is equivalent to GCSE grades 8-4. The qualification focuses on an applied study of the interactive media sector and learners will gain a broad understanding and knowledge of working in the sector.
This qualification has been designed to sit alongside the requirements of core GCSE subjects and is appropriate for learners who are motivated and challenged by learning through hands-on experiences and through content which is concrete and related directly to those experiences.
The qualification consists of 4 units taught over 12 guided learning hours (GLH):
Unit 01 – Investigate interactive media production (30 GLH)
Unit 02 – Plan and prepare for an interactive media product (30 GLH)
Unit 03 – Development and production of an interactive media product (40 GLH)
Unit 04 – Present and promote an interactive media product (20 GLH)
